Buxus microphylla var.japonica
‘Buxus’: box - the ancient Latin name for this plant; ‘microphylla’: small leaves; ‘japonica’: of Japan.
The leaves are obovate to obcordate, with the apex pointed or notched. They are up to 20mm (¾in) long and up to 8mm (⅛in) wide. This is a slow growing and compact plant.
Soil - Well drained fertile sandy to light clay with reliable moisture.
Containers - Good in pots, tubs & troughs.
Aspect - Full sun to semi shade & is frost tolerant.
Climate - Cool to cool temperate.
Flowers & Fruit
The small flowers are petalous and inconspicuous with a honey smell. They occur in leaf axils during spring.
This small fruit is a globular capsule on short apical prongs with six glossy black seeds inside .The fruit is not normally seen and the plant is reproduces vegetatively.
