Ophiopogon japonicus-
From Greek ophio, “serpent”, + pogon, “beard”; “japonicus”, Latin, meaning “of Japan”.

This rhizomatous plant forms a tufted clump habit and looks grass-like. The dark green leaves are long linear and the flowers are mauve. It forms a soft dense mat and is an excellent border plant and ground cover.

Soil - Sandy to clay soils are preferred but will handle poor soils.
Containers - Perfect edging plant in pots to soften the edge. Good in pots, tubs & troughs.
Aspect - Semi shade preferred, drought tender & is frost tolerant.
Climate - Cool to cool temperate.
Flowers & Fruit
The flowers are small white to mauve and lilac from November to December.
The pea-sized fruit is hidden amongst the leaves and contains only one seed. Purple to blue in colour from January - March.

Cultivars
'Kyoto Dwarf' - This small plant produces small leaves 5-10cm long.
'Variegatea' - The leaves are cream-green and the flowers are pail mauve.
